Crisis support provided as part of a hub of wellbeing services

Issue date:

In August 2023, Te Whatu Ora Southern announced Ngā Kete Mātauranga Pounamu Charitable Trust (Ngā Kete) as the provider of a new mental health crisis support service in Invercargill.

The new crisis support service is provided as part of a hub of wellbeing services in a specialised, co-ordinated setting called the Tūmanako Oranga Wellness Centre (The Centre).

The Centre aims to connect whānau with resources and ideas and energy for wellbeing and independence offering a range of existing mental health and addiction services and groups as well as new ones. More details can be found here.

Crisis community advocacy and crisis community respite care

The service called Tūmanako Oranga sits alongside Health NZ |Te Whatu Ora Southern’s regional crisis response service. The service provides 24-hour support services including outreach and crisis respite beds available for short–term respite care.

Accessing the service

The service is available for those aged 18 and over and can be accessed in one of two ways - via a referral from Te Whatu Ora Southern’s Specialist Mental Health and Addiction (MHA) team, or via a referral from their GP.

Ngā Kete’s services are available to both Māori and non-Māori Southlanders.
