Find out more about the hospitals across the Southern region, the specialist services that are available, and preparing for a hospital stay.
Most of the time, you will be able to stay well at home, and in the care of your general practice.
However sometimes, you may require the expertise of a specialist in a particular medical field. In these situations, your GP or other health care professional (such as a midwife) may refer you to a Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora - Southern specialist.
Specialists are often based at one of the Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora - Southern hospitals, although they will sometimes hold clinics at other locations, such as one of the rural hospitals across the district. They may also hold some follow-up appointments by video (telehealth, also known as virtual health), to enable some people to avoid ongoing travel.
There may also be times when you are required to stay in hospital to be close to specialist expertise and equipment. You could be receiving or recovering from surgery, or you may require other tests or observations.
As a Southern health system, our aim is to provide you with the best possible care, wherever you are on this journey.
