Lakes District Hospital Queenstown Hospital Services

    Lakes District Hospital is situated in Frankton, near Queenstown, and services all the communities in the Queenstown Lakes District including Garston, Kingston, Glenorchy, Queenstown, Arrowtown and the Wakatipu Basin.  Lakes District Hospital is 2½ hours from our base hospital (Southland Hospital) by road and 45 minutes by helicopter.  

    There are over 1 million district visitors annually with a permanent population of about 47,000 people.

    Lakes District Hospital staff see a variety of work with up to 1,400 ED presentations per month leading to about 50 transfers to secondary or tertiary hospitals.  Lakes District Hospital consists of 25 beds, a mix of maternity, acute medical, radiology, emergency and outpatient departments. 

    There is a vending machine in the Emergency Department reception area with some snacks available. 

    In 2019, refurbishment work was completed, including the addition of a new Emergency department, Radiology suite including a CT scanner, and refurbishment of the Outpatients department, including Telemedicine rooms.

    Services provided include:

    • 12 beds for Inpatient Acute Care
    • 5 Maternity beds
    • 10 beds for Level 2 Emergency service that provides assessment and stabilisation 
    • Outpatient Clinics, Day Surgery and the Mobile Surgical Bus which visits every 6 weeks
    • Specialists visit Lakes District Hospital to provide outpatient clinics and day surgery for minor procedures
    • Allied Health Services physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, speech language therapy, dietitian and district nursing, allied health assistants
    • Diagnostic services of radiology, bed-side ultrasound, X-Ray and CT are also provided. We have digital radiology at the hospital
    • Mental Health and Dental Services are co-located to the hospital and provide a wide range of services.

    Procedures

    Emergency Department

    In an emergency call 111. For health advice call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

    Lakes District Hospital's Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

    Open to all emergencies which do not come under the umbrella of GP care.

    Offers treatment and stabilisation of acute presentations and injuries.

    Patients may be transferred to Southland or Dunedin hospitals or the ward.

     

     

    Inpatient Services

    Ward Visiting Hours – 11 am to 6.00 pm daily.  Children are not to be left unsupervised on hospital grounds.

    Please note that at times the number of visitors might be limited due to infection control policies.  If possible keep visitors to one or two people at a time. 

    We appreciate that this may be difficult for you and your loved ones.  If you need to visit someone on the General Ward for compassionate reasons or to accompany a child please ask to speak to the Charge Nurse.

    Outpatient Clinics

    Lakes District Hospital Outpatients Department is open from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm Mon - Fri and includes three consultation rooms and two telemedicine rooms.

    Clinics are provided by visiting specialists from throughout the district.

    Wakatipu Community Mental Health Team

    A community mental health service operates opposite Lakes District Hospital.

    This is a day unit and does not have beds for overnight stays.

    District Nursing

    District Nursing service provides holistic support to patients in their own environment, allowing them to maintain their independence with dignity.

    District Nursing services are available Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4.00pm. 

    Weekend Opening Hours are 8.00 am to 12 noon

    Mobile Surgical Bus

    The Mobile Surgical Bus, which is a specially equipped mobile operating theatre, is hosted by Lakes District Hospital on a 6-weekly interval and brings day surgery facilities to the people of Queenstown Lakes. This eliminates the need for patients to travel to main centres to receive low risk operations.

    Meals on Wheels

    Meals are cooked by the adjacent Arvida, Lake Wakatipu Care Centre and Hospital kitchen and distributed throughout the area by volunteer drivers.
