What is Sport and Exercise Medicine?

Axis Sports Medicine Specialists are sport and exercise physicians who are trained to use physical activity as a treatment strategy (“exercise as medicine”). Sport and exercise physicians are also trained to optimise the management of medical conditions that impact on exercise. Examples of these are diabetes, cardiac problems and asthma.

    Exercise Medicine

Most chronic diseases are rooted in – or even caused by – a lack of physical activity. Strong evidence shows that when people don’t exercise, they increase their risk of many health conditions. Their overall life expectancy is also shortened. But it’s not just about prevention; amongst other conditions, exercise can also be an effective part of treating a variety of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, pulmonary disease, neurological disease, diabetes, pre-diabetes, obesity and anxiety and depression.

Our team are specialists in providing exercise medicine services within a structured framework to support chronic sufferers with programmes designed to improve overall health, either by preventing or managing injury, chronic conditions and diseases, or helping patients regain their previous function.
